Akiko Yano - I'm Home
Akiko Yano is a wonderful Japanese musician coming out of the same vibrant scene that spawned Yellow Magic Orchestra, Horuomi Hosono, and so many others. Her music is fun, weird and lovable, in a way that's reminiscent of Kate Bush. There's a sense of unbridled enthusiasm to her performances that's charming, and draws you into her quirky world in a friendly way.
The excellent production and songwriting on her 1981 album "I'm Home" make it a great place to start. The synthesizer work on this album is stupendous, a typical hallmark of much of the music coming out of Japan in the 80's:
